“STINKY, NOT MY FERRET!”
Stinky is a word that never gets associated with the ferrets in Ann’s Ferret Shelter & Adoption, just the ferret poop. This is not because we spray them with ferret deodorizer spray. This is because of
simple things we do to prevent odor from building up. If you leave a poopy diaper on your coffee table, guess what your room will smell like, poop. The same is true with ferret items. So here are our rules of
thumb…
- Ferrets do not need to be bathed all the time. The more often they are bathed the more musky smelling they become. When you wash away the musky odor you also wash away the natural oils on the skin and it makes them produce more. So your ferret being bathed too frequently can make them smell worse. Most
articles I have ready fall between the 2-4 months. I do it every 3-4 months, but I let them play in flesh water daily, if they like it.
- A litter box smells like a litter box. Keeping the litter box clean is a chore. This chore should be done everyday and depending on how many ferrets use it, maybe two times a day. You flush the toilet so no one smells your food leftovers. Don’t make them smell theirs.
- Change the bedding at least once a week will do unless they have become dirty due to poop or other things. It also prevents hairballs. They shed so it is a way to prevent odors that linger.
- Clean the toys once at least once a week. Stuffed toy can be washed in a washer. Hard toys can we washed in a sink with a little dish soap.
- Wash out litter boxes at least once a week, we do it daily. Using cooking spray on the empty clean litter pan makes the poop slide down the side instead of collecting on the sides of the litter pans.
- If you think the poop it self just is tooo stinky for your delicate nose you may use Bi-odor in their water. Different ferret foods can make ferret’s poop smell different. Try not to use foods with high fish
percentages.
- Keep the play areas clear of debris. Look under items in the area for hidden land mines. If not discovered they will grow over time. Ferrets love to hide presents and will keep hiding them in the same area as long as they can. Using a little bit of vinegar water in a spray bottle and cleaning the area with it help deter the ferret from using the same area over and over. Pay special attention to corners.
- Very smelly poop is a bad sign. They might need to see a vet. It can be a very serious problem with your ferret’s health.
